About Rapala

About Rapala

In Finland in 1936 Lauri Rapala carved his first lure out of cork and planted the seed that would later become Rapala. This first lure had a wobbling action in the water and gave the impression of an injured small fish that larger fish would strike on. This lure would become the Original Floater and be the inspiration for many future Rapala lures. This wobble action that simulates the action of a wounded prey fish is a key of every Rapala lure to the current day.

At the beginning, Lauri made all of the lures by himself, but as demand grew, his family joined in creating lures. But even then, each and every lure was tested by Lauri before it was passed to the marketplace to ensure that the wobble was correct and representative of Rapala quality.

In the mid and late 1950’s exports began to make their way to the US and as more people began to fish with the Rapala lures with successful results Rapala sales continued to increase. Rapala lures continued to expand over the years and they continue to manufacture and sell products worldwide to the current day.
